Portland stone retirement gift for a surgeon. 230mm x 150mm
The brief for this commission was to depict a surgeon who specialised in scaphoid bone fractures, enjoyed sailing and liked jazz. Katherine's idea for this difficult concept was to target these three points including his step into retirement.
The design was centred around the hand, and its pose on the operating table. There is a small boat sailing on the hand where the bone is pinned together. There are jazz cords flowing freely over the hand like swirling waves, the second boat riding these waves represents his transition into retirement.
