About/CV

CV – Katherine Worthington

Katherine is a London-based multi award winning architectural and figurative stone carver, sculptor, letter cutter and stone mason who has worked consistently since 1997 in this field. She has restored many prestigious and historic buildings, figurative monuments and commemorative plaques in London and the UK. She also carves and installs new church furnishings such as altars. She welcomes private commissions and produces her own work. She is a member of the Art Workers Guild.

At Weymouth College she achieved a distinction in architectural carving and won the annual boss stone carving competition. During her two year carving apprenticeship at York Minster she worked on the Great West Door for two years and was chosen to carve a plaque unveiled by HRH the Duke of York. During her London work she was selected to carve half a Corinthian capital at St Paul’s Cathedral where she was then offered permanent employment as a stone carver. She then chose self-employment allowing her to expand in this field.

She has carved inscriptions commemorating events and important historic people such as Ignatius Sancho, the first black Briton to receive the vote; this was unveiled at Greenwich Park. She is the in-house stone carver for St John's Church, Notting Hill, London, carving names on the remembrance plaques. She carves the Lord Mayors’ names annually at Kensington Town Hall’s council chambers.

Her figurative stone carving includes the restoration of prestigious London monuments, King George II, and the marble statues at the Albert Memorial, Royal Kensington Parks; she was head carver at the Albert Memorial. Her stone portraits include a medieval bishop and the heads of the project architects for the restoration of Westminster Abbey’s Chapter House. She also sculpted journalist Darcus Howe’s portrait, winning an award. Her carved heraldic beasts and shields can be seen on Leicester Square’s London Hippodrome and Darnley Mausoleum in Cobham Wood, Kent.

She carved the marble altar suite for the reordering of St Peter and St Pauls Church, Wolverhampton which won the Ecclesiastical Architects and Surveyors Presidents Award 2009 for new work in churches.

Katherine contributed to a Public Art Time Piece, designed by Marianne Forrest, by carving letters in Welsh and English on a circular stone bench. She was also commissioned to carve two sculptures by Atoi artists and Anarch Gallery which was exhibited at Tate Britain, Six Shooter Art Fair.

She has been teaching stone carving since 2013 at Heatherley’s School of Fine Art, Chelsea, London. She started teaching in September 2015 at The Art Academy, London Bridge, London.
